Her Privates We was published the previous year as The Middle Part of Fortune which was subsequently revised with obscenities partially removed for the present edition. Frederic Manning is generally recognised as one of the finest novelist of the Western Front. Born in Australia, novelist and poet, Frederic Manning moved to England in his youth. He served in the Shropshire Light Infantry in 1915, and in France during 1916 as a Private 19022a . The Shropshires saw heavy fighting on the Somme and his experiences provided the background to Her Privates We. A classic book of World War I written from the ordinary soldier’s point of view.
