Two first edition volumes of New Arabian Nights by R. L. Stevenson
A scarce first edition pair of New Arabian Nights in very good condition. The first issue of Stevenson’s collection of short stories. the book incudes The Suicide Club and The Pavilion on the Links. Provenance of ownership from the library of Richard Adams, the English novelist and writer of the famous books, Watership Down, and The Plague Dogs. Adams bought the book from Henry Sotheran of London in January 1979. The original receipt is included with the two volumes.
Original green cloth decorated with red and black spines lettered in gilt. The covers are rubbed with some marks present. Slight lean to the volumes. Lightly faded spine especially noted on the first volume. Leaf patterned end papers with half title to each volume. Contemporary ownership signature of J. Muzio on the title page of the first volume. 32 page publishers catalogue dated May 1882 at the rear of the second volume, partially uncut. Page 155 of the second volume is incorrectly numbered as 55. Also “Maletroit” is mispelt as “Maledroit” on page 179. 8vo. 269 and 234 pp with 32 pages of advertisements in the second volume.
