Burmese Days by George Orwell

A very good condition of Burmese Days by George Orwell, and scarce to find with the front endpaper. The first British edition of the author’s debut novel and second published book, following Down and Out in Paris and London (1933). The novel draws on Orwell’s experiences serving in the Indian Imperial Police in Burma between 1922 and 1927. Gollancz initially declined to publish the work, fearing its biting portrayal of colonial society could invite libel claims from those it resembled. As a result, it was released in the United States a year before its British debut. For the UK edition, Orwell revised the names of characters drawn from real-life figures and included a fresh author’s note, somewhat disingenuously stating that “all the characters in this book are entirely fictitious.” Original black cloth boards with light bumping on the spine ends. Clean contents. Pencil notes on the 8vo 318
