Description
Jane Eyre, An Autobiography, edited by Currer Bell (Charlotte Brontë)
All three volumes of Brontë’s first and most highly sought-after book, Jane Eyre. Currer Bell was Charlotte Brontë’s pseudonym. The volumes have been professionally renovated using traditional conservation techniques and materials. All with new spines sympathetic to the originals and retaining the original boards and endpapers. They come with a bespoke slipcase and slider. All three volumes with the signature of George Granville Bradley, Dean of Westminster Abbey from 1881-1902, on the front endpaper.
This is a mixed set. Vol 1 is the 1847 first edition, first state with the advertisements at the rear, including the rare Calcutta Review. Correctly dated October ‘47 preceded by the cover sheet stating June ‘47. One of only 500 printed. The other two volumes are second editions of 1848 (undocumented print numbers).
The boards are in good condition. Worn in places with marks, especially to the Vol 3 rear (see image). Internally, all three are in excellent condition with only minor marks and next to no foxing. All pages are complete. The half title page to Vol 1 has repairs to the lost section not affecting the text (see image). Ref: Ashley 1:72, Grolier English 83, Sadler 346, Wolff 826.
