Forster, E. M.

The British novelist and literary critic E. M. Forster (January 1, 1879 – June 7, 1970) achieved fame through his novels which focused on social issues of class, difference and hypocrisy. Where Angels Fear to Tread (1905), Howard’s End, Room with a View (1908), Maurice, and Passage to India (1924). Forster was a member of the literary ‘Bloomsbury set’, and a perceptive critic. Forster was offered and refused a knighthood in 1949, accepted a Companion of Honour in 1953, eight honorary degrees, and the Order of Merit on his 90th birthday. He spent the last 25 years of his life as an honorary fellow of King’s College Cambridge.
