Jean de Brunhoff

Jean De Brunhoff (1899-1937) is often considered the father of the modern picture book with his creation of the famous character of Babar. The stories and illustrations of the charming elephant included tales of death, marriage and birth in life. In addition, their unique large format, cursive writing and double page spread were instantly attractive to children. Tragically Brunhoff died at an early age and wrote only 7 books. His son, Laurence, continued his legacy publishing 50 further works. Rare first editions of Brunhoff’s work remain a popular collector’s item and are highly sought after today.
