Florence Upton

Florence Kate Upton (22 February 1873 – 16 October 1922) was an American-born English cartoonist and author who is recognised for her contribution to the development of the children’s character, Golliwogg. Her parents had recently emigrated to New York and during a period of family financial difficulty she began to sketch out ideas for a children’s book using her favourite peg dolls as her models. The publishing house of Longmans, Green & Co offered to publish her first work, The Adventures of Two Dutch Dolls and a Golliwogg for Christmas 1895. Upton moved to London, England and went onto write and illustrate thirteen more Golliwogg books, the last being published in 1909. The  cultural drift drove the series to wane and Florence Upton sought a career as a professional artist in her later years. She died aged only 49 in London after complications after surgery.
