Oliver Twist by Charles Dickens, 1838 – First edition book set

£2,250.00

Published by Richard Bentley, London 1838

Three Volumes of Oliver Twist, or the Parish Boy’s Progress by “Author of the Pickwick Papers” by Charles Dickens. London: Richard Bentley, 1838.

Three volumes of the classic novel, Oliver Twist,  which includes the “church plate” version in the final plate rather than the “Fireside” plate. Bought from the Sydney collection of late Hon. Robert Marsham Townsend, Lords of the Manor of Chislehurst. A lovely set of Charles Dickens works in very good condition.

Brown cloth covers with embossed illustrations on the front and bright gilt lettering. “Boz” marked on the spines. The three volume publication date was 9 November 1839, and within a week, at Dickens’s insistence, the title pages were changed to include his name, and the “Church” version of the final plate was substituted for the “Fireside” plate. No half-title as called for in Volume III. The contents are clean – staining to title pages from the plates opposite. The spines are slightly faded with mild wear to the spine ends but gilt still bright and clear. Tiny tear on page 209 of the second volume. Smattering of foxing. 8vo.
