First Edition of They by Rudyard Kipling:

First Edition They: Bright, clean and tidy white cloth hard board covers in close to fine condition, only marred by slightly faded gold gilt illustration and lettering. Corners and edges of the boards are in fine condition. Internally in fine condition with 15 unmarked and fine colour illustrations. Slight age browning of pages and tissue guards. Bindings tight and very slight bowing.

They is a fictional story set in the Sussex countryside of England and is said to have parallels to Kipling’s own tragic life experiences of his own child’s illness and subsequent death. The story is illustrated by Frederick Henry Townsend (1868-1920) who was the first Art Editor of Punch Magazine. It was originally published in August 1904 by Scribner’s Magazine and also as part of a collection of short stories in Traffics and Discoveries within the same year.
