The Wind in the Willows by Kenneth Grahame, Illustrated by Arthur Rackham:

The Wind in the Willows was originally issued in 1908 and Kenneth Grahame asked Arthur Rackham to illustrate his book. However, Rackham had to reluctantly turn the offer down as he was already committed to the publication of A Midsummer’s Night Dream. Fortunately the book became a classic by the late 1930’s and another opportunity arose to illustrate the book for the¬†Limited Editions Club. Grahame’s wife, (widowed) approached Rackham for the task. She assisted him to rediscover some of the places on the Thames which inspired the writing of The Wind of the Willows.

The author, A.A. Milne, was a great admirer of the novel and he was delighted to adapt it for the stage in 1929. Milne re-titled the novel as “Toad of Toad Hall” and initially it was a successful Christmas show for many years in London and made into a film in 1947. Milne writes an affectionate introduction in this edition of The Wind in the Willows.
