First Edition The War in the Air novel: Original blue cloth boards and gilt lettering on the front and spine. The spine is darkened and there are signs of wear with tears on the edges of the spine. Fore and bottom ends of the pages are untrimmed. There is some age toning particularly on the front and end rear pages. This is expected with many similar antique books. there is a tissue guarded illustration facing the title page. Sixteen full page black and white illustrations throughout the book. There is a slight binding split on page 178 but the hinges are hollding well. 8 vo. 389 printed pages plus two pages of advertisements at the end of the book.
The War in the Air was one of Well’s stories published after serialization. During the 1880’s it was common for novels to be serialized in magazines or newspapers to entice readers to purchase the complete edition. It was initially published in The Pall Mall Magazine. The War in the Air is one of Well’s typically revolutionary works depicting the warfare through the eyes of the common man.
