The Vicar of Wakefield, or A Tale, Supposed to be written by Himself, is a romantic novel by the Irish author, Oliver Goldsmith (1728–1774). It was initially published in 1766 and was one of the most widely read 18th-century novels among the Victorians. Arthur Rackham illustrated the book for limited editions for the British and American market. This copy is numbered 129 of 200 copies for the American issues published by the Philadelphia publisher, David McKay Company. It is signed by the illustrator, Arthur Rackham.
Cream hard backed covers with gilt lettering on the spine and front cover plus triple lined border. Rose motif on the spine. Spine and edges are a little darkened. Dated 1929 on the spine. Small mark of the title lettering. Otherwise the covers are clean. The corners and edges have minimal wear. Gilt top end of the pages. Side and bottom pages are uncut. Light grey/green illustrated end pages in very good condition. Title page has red lettering of the tile and illustration. Twelve full page colour illustrations including the frontpiece. Black and white illustrations throughout the text. 232 printed pages. 10.5 x 8″
