The Tale of Squirrel Nutkin, First Deluxe Edition, by Beatrix Potter
For this rare edition of ‘The Tale of Squirrel Nutkin’ Beatrix Potter used a special deluxe cloth binding, with a ‘flowered lavender chintz’ from her grandfather’s calico printing works in Manchester. She was concerned that the lettering might not show up on the patterned cloth covers and had the title and her name printed in gold on vellum labels. This edition is rare to find and is in anunrestored state.
Flowered cloth, all over grey with lavender and yellow against a white background. Darkened front and spine colours. Spine and back without printing or labels. Illustrated end papers. “A Story For Norah” dedication. Printed by Edmund Evans at The Raquet Court Press, Swan Street, London S.E. Frontis and 26 colour plates. Black and white drawing to the title-page. Quinby 5a . Hinges are frail and the edition is in need of re-casing and re-sewing. Sextodecimo. 86pp.
