Description

The Stark Munro Letters edited by A. Conan Doyle

A very good first edition copy of the series of sixteen letters written by J. Stark Munro to his friend and former fellow student, Herbert Swanborough, of Lowell, Massachusetts, during the years 1881 – 1884. As Swanborough explained, “I am sure that there is no privilege which my friend would value more highly than the thought that some other young man, harassed by the needs of this world and doubts of the next, should have gotten strength by reading how a brother had passed down the valley of shadow before him.” Edited and arranged by Doyle.

Original green cloth boards with gilt lettering on the covers and spine with bevelled edges. Very light bumping of spine ends and minimal wear to the corners. Clean black end papers. Pencil marks on half title page. Previous owners stamp on the verso of the frontpiece. Black and white illustrated title page and frontpiece. No tissue guard present. Water stain marks affecting the top edges of pages 179 – 337.  346 pp plus 24 pages of publishers advertisements date 1895. 8vo.
