A good copy of The Return of Sherlock Holmes first English edition following the U. S. edition by about one month. The first collection of thirteen Sherlock Holmes stories that were originally published serially in the Strand Magazine in the UK and Collier’s in the USA. Includes Holmes’ unsettling return to London after being presumed killed at the Reichenbach Falls and accounts for “The Great Hiatus” (as it is known amongst Sherlock followers) period from 1891 to 1894. The final story features John Watson’s statement of Holmes retirement and request for him not to publish any more stories. Illustrated with a frontispiece and fifteen further plates by Sidney Paget.

Original blue cloth boards with gilt lettering. Shelf wear and rubbed covers. The rear edge of the blue cloth of the spine is splitting. Contemporary presentation inscription dated 1905 on front pastedown. The front free page is partly excised. The hinge is loose in places. Spotting within the contents. Small doodle on page 127. 8vo 403pp plus 4 pages of advertisments.
