This adapted version of Alice in Wonderland, was aimed at under-fives. It was a sign of the growth of the children’s literature market of the time. It is interesting to see the listing of “The Nursery Alice” in the other works at the end of this book dated 1889. In fact, Dodgson had a considerable amount of control over his publications as his publishers, Macmillan, merely printed and distributed the books for a small commission. Dodgson was therefore able to dictate the fate of any edition. He was indeed dissatisfied with this first printing of “The Nursery Alice”. He recalled the entire 10,000 print run of the first copies of the book. Dodgson exerted similar control over other publications he was not satisfied with as seen the recall of an inferior edition of The Game of Logic (1886).
