Through the Looking Glass with fifty wood cut illustrations by John Tenniel throughout the text. Armorial bookplate of Arthur Rawson Ashwell (1824 – 1879) to the front paste down. (Ashwell was a recognised preacher, writer and teacher of his time. He was the principal of the Oxford Diocesan Training College, and also at the Theological College at Chichester which had a canon position attached.) An edged bookplate of Castle Point, Salcombe, Devon is pasted on the front free endpaper.
Original gilt embossed red cloth hard boards with a medallion design to the upper and lower covers. All edges gilt. Dark green replaced end papers. Tissue guarded frontis illustration. Spotting to the front free end paper and verso as well as the half title page. Otherwise the contents are clean. Publishers embossed logo imprinted on the title page. Misprint “wade” on page 21 instead of “wabe” as correctly printed on the mirror version of the rhyme. Page 71-74 are detached. The spine is darkened and the spine has been strengthened. The edges are slightly rubbed. 224 pp with advertisement pages at the rear. 8vo
