Description

The Jewel of the Seven Stars by Bram Stoker

Rare true first UK edition (US version is far more common) of Stoker’s second most famous book after Dracula. The Jewel of the Seven Stars printed by William Heinemann, 1903, a year before the first US printing. The plot centres around an archaeologist’s plot to revive an ancient Egyptian mummy. The first edition has the original ending which was changed to a happy ending in later editions, where the archaeologist’s girlfriend and companions did not die. It is unclear whether Stoker himself made the changes. Other first issue points are the inclusion of Chapter XVI, deleted in later printings and a 337 page hardcover. Red cloth cover stamped on front panel in blind, black and gold, with gold to spine and blind stamped to rear panel.

Faded and worn spine with wear to the spine ends and rubbed gilt. Grubby boards and edge wear. Basic repaired spine and nick on the front board edge. Previous owners signatures on the end pages. Browned and marked contents with basic internal tape repairs to the hinges of some of the pages. Small tears on the page edges in places. 8vo. 337 pp
