First and Early editions of The Five Christmas Books by Charles Dickens
A lovely collection of the five Christmas Books all in good/very good state and 1st or 2nd editions. Dickens published the popular five stories of strong social and moral messages during the 1840s. The series of five books includes A Christmas Carol, The Chimes, The Cricket on the Hearth, The Battle of Life and The Haunted Man and the Ghost’s Bargain. All original cloth with gilt tiles and decoration. All edge gilt. 12 mo. 16.5 x 10.5 cm.
First/second printing 1843: A Christmas Carol in prose being a ghost story at Christmas. Includes four hand drawn coloured plates by John Leech. The only Dickens title to include colour plates. Printed the same year as the first edition, this edition had a small print run of just 1000 according to Patten pp 146-9. Two dark marks on the edges of the front cover. A little cocked. The spine ends are missing and slight 2cm tear down the rear spine fold. Wear to corners. Binding is tight but cracked spine on front hinge. Two small tears on the edge of the title page. Cream end papers. ‘Stave One’ on first chapter. Clean and browned pages with brown spots on seven of the pages. 166 pp plus 2 pages of advertisements.
First edition, first state: The Chimes, A Goblin Story of some Bells that rang an Old Year Out and a New Year in – 1845. Illustrated by J. Leach, R. Doyle, D Maclise and C. Stanfield. Frontpiece and vignette title page plus thirteen illustrations throughout the text. The edition is rebacked with the original spine laid down. Blind stamped corners with a few marks on the covers. Light wear to the corners. Rare first edition, first state with colon after “London” on the title page and publisher’s name on the vignette title page. 175 pp
First edition, first state: The Cricket on the Hearth, Fairy Tale of Home 1846. Complete with 14 engraved illustrations including a fine frontispiece and title-page, by John Leech, R. Doyle and others. Lightly faded spine and wear to spine edges and small section of rear spine edge. Plain end papers and clean contents. Rare first state two-line italic headline for Oliver Twist on page 175.
First edition, forth state: The Battle of Life, A Love Story 1846: Three illustrations by D. Maclise, R. Doyle, J. Leech, C. Stanfield, et.al. Todd. With vignette title in the fourth state.(E1 & Eckel 4. Smith II, 8). Faded spine with wear to spine ends. Two small black marks on the cover. Black mark on page 31.
First edition: The Haunted Man and The Ghost’s Bargain 1848: Dark spotting across the boards. Wear to extremities and 1/4 ” split on the top rear by the spine. Signature of previous owner on the front free page. Some spotting within the contents. Browned pages.
