Droles de Betes signed by Andre Helle
An extremely good copy of this rare find of a children’s illustrated book. Droles de Betes is Helle’s first book and contains Art Deco style illustrations of animals. Large folio size. 20 pochoir prints of various sizes tipped into the pages. 2 contemporary presentation inscriptions in French to the half title, both addressed to Fanny Roscaol at Christmas 1911. The first inscription is from Pierre Muller, the second seemingly from the author/illustrator Helle, with a little pen and ink sketch of a donkey. The hand lettered French text of informal paragraphs about each of the twenty animals. Quite exquisite.
Cloth backed pictorial boards with old water staining to the lower half of the volume. Resulted crinkling of the pages. Some edge wear and loosening of the rear cover from the binding. Repaired front hinge. 4cm tear on “Tigre” page. 3cm tear on page “L’Oiseau”.”La Marabout”,”Le Dindon” and L’Autruche” pages are loose. Folio (42 x 31.5cm).
