Arthur Rackham was at the peak of his career from 1905 to 1929 and this work of A Christmas Carol First Edition is a classic example of his masterful work from this Golden Age of Illustration.
Book: Original purple cloth boards in good condition. Gilt illustration of bells and elves on the cover and embossed green holly leaves along the spine. Spine ends a little worn. Publishers logo embossed on the rear cover. Illustrated front and rear end papers. List of characters included on the front pages. Preface by Charles Dickens dated Dec 1843. “London: William Heinemann 1915” on verso of title page. Unmounted frontis illustration. Twelve colour tissue guarded illustrations and eighteen (plus two smaller) black and white illustrations. All illustrations in good condition. Bindings are brittle yet holding. Clean and tidy copy with some foxing on the front and end pages.
Dust jacket: Dust jacket illustrated with holly, red berries and image of Scrooge. Spine is illustrated. Rear of the dust jacket has listed works of Arthur Rackham from A Christmas Carol to The Ingoldsby Legends published by Heinemann. Jacket is browned and large section of the spine is missing with chipped corners and edges. 8 x 6″ 147pp
