A tidy and very decent copy of this early publication of a Scottish novel by Robert Louis Stevenson.

First Edition: The Master of Ballantrae, A Winter Tale by R. L. Stevenson:

Original, red cloth boards with clear black lettering with illustrations on the front, rear covers and spine. Spine lightly darkened. Slight staining of boards and somewhat cocked. Mushroom/flower decorated end papers in good condition.Internally a scattering of foxing and age toning. Inscription and small booksellers stamp on the front end pages. Dedicated to Sir Percy florence and Lady Shelly by R. L. S  “Waikiki, May 17, 1889”. 332 printed pages with 20 pages of advertisements at the end ( 2 pages uncut). 8 x 5 1/2. 8vo. This first edition of The Master of Ballantrae is in good condition.

The Scottish author, Robert Louis Stevenson, was a prolific writer during his twenty year career. His writing covered a wide range of genres from essays, short stories, travel writings, romances and novels in addition to plays, poetry and biographies. The Master of Ballantrae: A Winter’s Tale is set in Scotland during the Jacobite rising of 1745 and  relates the conflict between two Scottish noblemen. The novel displays his fine writing skills.
