This is the second book in the Babar series. Jean de Brunhoff wrote and illustrated six books in the Babar series before his death at age 37 (or 38 depending on the source) of tuberculosis. The inspiration for the story of Babar was a bedtime story that de Brunhoff’s wife Cecile told to amuse her son Mathieu during an illness at the age of four. The story was relayed to de Brunhoff who expanded it, named the elephant Babar, and put it down on paper with his own illustrations. The first book, Historie de Babar le petit elephant (The Story of Babar) became so popular that de Brunhoff decided to add on further stories. This second book, Le Voyage de Babar, follows Babar and his Wife Celeste as they travel by Balloon to many exotic locations.
