A second edition, seventeenth thousand publication of the classic work of Charles Darwin. The Descent of Man discusses evolutionary theory to human development and natural selection. Originally published in 1871 this very collectable second edition is in a good condition.
Original green cloth boards with imprinted patterning and bright gilt lettering on the spine. The covers are lightly marked and the corners bumped. Dark marks on the rear cover. Spine ends and edges are worn and lightly frayed. There is a 6cm repair of the front edge of the spine with a fine closed split below the “Man”. Brown end papers with split hinges. Tiny blue booksellers stamp on the front paste down. Faded dark signature on paste down dated 1883. Light foxing and age toning throughout the book. The bindings are tight. 693 printed pages with 32 pages of advertisments at the end of the book.
