Decline and Fall by Evelyn Waugh: First Edition

Waugh’s first novel, Decline and Fall, employs his characteristic black humour in lampooning various features of British society in the 1920s. Waugh himself stated boldly in his ‘Authors Note’ to the first edition, ‘Please bear in mind throughout that IT IS MEANT TO BE FUNNY.’ With six illustrations including a fontis illustration. No dust jacket.

Red and black decorated hard boards with gilt lettering on the spine. The spine has some tears on the edges and the red colour is faded. The gilt is rubbed. Tiny hole on the front spine edge. Slight cocked edition. Front free page has pencil marks. Some light browning of the pages with slight water stain on the contents page. Otherwise the contents are generally clean. Circular mark on the rear board. 8vo 28 printed pages.
