The Descent of Man and Selection in Relation to Sex, 2 volumes, by Charles Darwin
A rare pair of first edition, 2nd printing editions of Charles Darwin’s classic work in good condition. The volumes contain black and white illustrations throughout the text. The sixteen page catalogue at the rear of the books are dated January 1871. The word “evolution” is used for the first time by Darwin on page two of the first volume.
Original green cloth boards with blind stamped illustration on the cover. Gilt lettering and borders to the spine. Wear to the spine ends with some tears and light damage. Corners are bumped. Volume 1 has faint white and tiny black ink marks on the cover. Black coated end papers with black marking/repaired tear on the first volume’s rear page. The rear hinge is splitting on the first volume. Small booksellers stamp on the rear paste down of the first volume.
