Lewis Carroll adapted his Alice in Wonderland for children under-five as a sign of the growth of the children’s literature market of the time. The later edition of the book. The covers illustrations are by E. Getrude Thompson. Containing twenty coloured enlargements from John Tenniel’s illustrations to ‘Alice in Wonderland’. Generally a very good copy of this classic book.
Original illustrated hardback covers. Colours are unusually bright with some wear to the edges and corners of the covers. White end papers in good condition. Light signature on the front free page. Tissue guarded frontis illustration with the bottom loose by 1″. Colours of the illustrations are bright and free from children’s scribbles or tears. Page 48 and 49 have staining. Pages are generally clean, a little browned and some light marks. Page 34 illustration of the Cheshire Cat and Alice has no profile of Alice. Contains “A Nursery Darling” and “Preface, dedicated to any mother” at the beginning of the book. Fifty six numbered pages of text plus “An Easter Greeting to every Child who loves Alice” and “Christmas Greetings, from a fairy to a child” at the rear of the text. Plus two pages of other works by Lewis Carroll and “A caution to readers” regarding other books confusing authors with Carroll. Also a “Specimen Page” of “Alice’s Adventures Underground”. 4to.
