My African Journey by The Rt. Hon Winston Churchill M.P
A lovely edition of Churchill’s only printing of his travelogue in East Africa with a unique provenance. The African Journey was owned by Thomas Blofield as evidenced through the armorial bookplate. This fine bookplate was designed by Sit Henry John Fanshawe Badeley (1874-1951) who was responsible for the design of many bookplates for the Royal Family and members of the peerage. In addition, Thomas Blofeld was a good friend of Ian Fleming, the 007, James Bond author. Fleming names his cat stroking villain after this friend “Blofeld”. This book is notable for being the only one of Churchill’s many books which contains photographs ostensibly taken by the author. A rare find.
Complete with the 61 tipped in photographs and 3 maps and tissue guard for the frontpiece. Red, black and blue covers with rhino illustration on the cover. The spine is faded. Tear on the lower edge of the spine with a tiny piece missing. Bumped ends of the spine. Corners bumped. Faded gilt lettering on the spine. Some marks on the covers. Very clean end pages. Bookplate of Thomas Blofeld on the facing page of the half title page. The contents and illustrations are clean and only very slightly browned. A very tidy copy. 8vo 226 printed pages. 16 pages of advertisements.
