Tangled Tale First Edition by Lewis Carroll (Charles Dodgson)

A Tangled Tale is a collection of 10 brief humorous stories  or “knots” which originally appeared as a serial in The Monthly Packet from 1880 and 1885. Each Knot is described in story form and then summarized as a mathematical problem. Dodgson writes in his preface that the “intention was to embody in each Knot… one or more mathematical questions – in Arithmetic, Alegbra or Geometry, as the case might be – for the amusement and possible edification, of the fair readers of that Magazine“. Dodgson included some discussions of the reader’s answers  often referring to them by name (often pseudonyms) and employing his typical polite yet cutting commentary. When the articles were published as a book some amendments to readers answers and six illustrations by Arthur C. Frost were added.
